Invincible 3
Nike’s Invincible running shoe has only been around since 2019, but in that short space of time, it has made a big impact. Known for its fantastic cushioning and responsive feel, this everyday runner has taken some of the most high-tech features from the brand’s elite footwear to make training light and easy. In 2023, Nike took the series to new levels of comfort and support with the release of the Invincible 3.
The foundation of the Invincible line is a huge slab of ZoomX foam. On the Nike Invincible 3, this exceptional cushioning material is both taller and broader than on its predecessors, with a stack height of 40mm that delivers excellent shock absorption and masses of energy return. This supports the runner through the entire step, and the 9mm heel-to-toe encourages forward propulsion. Meanwhile, the sole unit has been widened at both forefoot and heel to provide extra stability that prevents the foot from rolling, and thus reduces the chance of injury. Around the back of the shoe, the sturdy plastic heel clip has been reduced in size without compromising on its function, so it is more lightweight and yet still helps to support the foot. Completing the lower part of the Invincible 3 is a rubber outsole covered in a complex of waffle-style grip pads for high levels of traction on a range of outdoor surfaces.
As well as enhancing the performance of the shoe’s sole, Nike also evolved the design of its upper through the use of an improved Flyknit weave that is more breathable than before, especially in those areas that generate the most heat during exercise. It is durable and stretchy, so it shapes to the foot for a snug fit while also standing up to the rigours of everyday training. Targeted padding around the heel and over the tongue soften areas where the shoe might rub against the foot, therefore further enhancing the running experience.
Aesthetically, the Nike Invincible 3 has been constructed to have a more futuristic look. This is created by elements such as the contoured shape of the midsole, which gives it a streamlined, flowing appearance, and the reflective pull tab on the heel, which serves to illuminate the runner at night. Its branding is subtle, with swooshes on the lateral sidewall and toe, a ZoomX tab on the medial midsole and a thin badge displaying the model name over the tongue.
Without making any drastic changes to the key features of its predecessors, the Invincible 3 has managed to advance performance in almost every area by making small changes that produce significant effects. As a result, this high-mileage running shoe can support all types of athletes through their daily routines and can even be used to achieve solid times in events like the marathon. Well-cushioned, responsive and reliable, the Nike Invincible 3 ultimately gives the athlete that desired feeling of invincibility for which the shoe has been named.
